Densifiers function by interacting with the calcium hydroxide and free lime in the concrete after reaching its surface. A byproduct of this process fills the pores in the concrete, increasing the density of the surface. Lithium, sodium, magnesium, potassium, and other alkali or alkaline earth metal silicates are commonly used to make densifiers. Since lithium silicate works well and doesn't harm the environment, it is the most widely used.
